  • Crofton Downs, Davidcannon wrote 18 years ago:
This is the suburb where I spent my first seven years, 1965 to 1972. I have extremely vivid memories of Crofton Downs. There used to be a little farm at the end of Silverstream Road which, alas, is no more, and a little Foursquare superette owned by Mr Bruff (and later by Mr McCarthy), almost next to the Silverstream playground, was where my mother did much of her shopping.

American forces are said to have buried a great number of redundant miliary vehicles here following the surrender of Japanese forces at the end of World War II. This was more cost efficient than transporting them back to the USA.
  • Khandallah Swimming Pool, Davidcannon wrote 18 years ago:
I started learning to swim here in 1972.

a blight on the landscape, fully shaded most of the day, with views across the tight valley to nice old houses bathed in late afternoon sunshine. The developer has chosen to squeeze as many houses on the site as possible creating a future ghetto feel. Midway through the project the developer was prosecuted for clearing land that he didn't have council approval for, demonstrating a cavalier approach, but cunningly he used these events to offer clients who'd advanced bought properties, to back out. Allegedly his real reason for doing this was bcause property prices had risen in Wellington so he could actually sell the same property (unbuilt) for more at the time. Buyer beware.
